CATEGORIES:Séminaire du CREM
CREATED:20261002T001124
SUMMARY:[Annulé] Deux films et un ethnomusicologue
r of Music and South Asian studies, université de Harvard) et Jonathan Larc
\nTwo Poets and
a River (2021, 75 mn)Using the Oxus river as a topos, this film explores t
hemes of love and loss through the lives and musical poetry of two Wakhi mu
sicians: Qurbonsho in Tajikistan and Daulatsho in Afghanistan. These two po
et-singers share a common language and faith yet remain separated by viciss
itudes of the 19th c. Great Game in Central Asia, whereby the Wakhan homela
nd of the Wakhi people became a buffer zone between Russia and the British
Empire. The river Oxus, running right through the center of Wakhan, demarca
ted this zone. After the USSR and Afghanistan shored up their boundaries ci
rca 1930, the communities on each side of the river became firmly severed f
rom one another. The condition of being separated by a river grounds the po
ets’ discussions of love and loss in their own lives as well as in their mu
sical arts. The film was shot and produced over 2.5 years (2012-2020) with
the editorial collaboration of both Qurbonsho and Daulatsho, who narrate th
e film in Wakhi, Tajik and Dari.[pause]\nSolar Light (work in progress, ca.
25mn)The film documents Kota reflections on a project to introduce solar p
owered lights into the Kota village of Kolmel in 1992, and in the process,
the author's own research and relationship with the Kota people over the pa
st 36 years.
