Reflections on podcast and sound documentary production practice

Over the past 5 years, we have produced two sound documentaries for academic projects and currently have one commissioned for ARTE Radio. We come to this practice from complementary backgrounds: Pierre from research on Southeast Asian music, Fredrik from working with diasporic sound archives — most recently as Station Manager of SOAS Radio and through the EU-funded project DeCoSEAS (Decolonizing Southeast Asian Sound Archives). Our first project together was DeCoSEAS Podcast (English, 2023), on a week-long gathering of researchers, archivists and activists decolonizing Southeast Asian sound archives. The second, Sangkran magique (French, 2025, INALCO), examined the omnipresence of 1960s music in contemporary Cambodia. The third, “untitled” (French, forthcoming 2026, co-produced with ARTE Radio), is in post-production and continues the Cambodian thread started in Sangkran magique.

Why make podcasts? What have we learnt from our projects and collaborations? We will present our work and methodologies and how we think about sound documentary as an alternative to text-based scholarly production. Sound documentaries are an epistemological tool, as they can help us rethink sound recordings in academia and in the discipline of ethnomusicology; as well as an experimental tool of creation and writing for researchers (so-called "research in sound" and other "sound essays"). We will share excerpts from the work in progress and open a conversation on collaborative sound documentary practice and the editorial demands of public broadcasting.

Le Son Venu d'Ailleurs, épisode 4 : « c'est pas de la musique, non ? »

Le Son Venu d'Ailleurs est un podcast produit par le CREM, sous la direction artistique de Vanessa Tubiana et Victor A. Stoichiţa. Le premier épisode sera lancé le 5 octobre sur les plateformes de diffusion.

Dans cette séance nous écouterons en avant-première l'épisode 4, tout frais sorti du banc de mixage (15 mn). Il a été réalisé en 2025 par Nelly Frisicaro, Rosa-Lee Sander et Sarah Khalil, étudiantes en Master, avec la participation d'Élina Djebbari, Mateo Knox, Vanessa Tubiana et Victor Stoichiţă.

L'écoute pourra être suivie d'une discussion sur les orientations du podcast, sur ses méthodes de réalisation, ou sur si c'était vraiment de la musique ou pas.  

L'art de s'émouvoir avec Bernard Lortat-Jacob (capsule sonore)

Le 20 juin 2025 eut lieu à Nanterre le colloque L'art de sémouvoir ensemble, la musique au sens de Bernard Lortat-Jacob. En marge de cette rencontre, C: André, C. Domont, F. Tissier et J. Ursot, étudiant·e·s en Licence, ont recueilli des témoignages sur les relations des participants avec Bernard. C. André et V. Stoichiţă ont ensuite réalisé une capsule sonore où les parols croisent des musiques du fonds Lortat-Jacob des archives du CREM.

Cette capsule mémorielle sera diffusée à partir d'octobre sur le site du CREM. Après son écoute (20mn), la discussion pourrait porter sur les manières de monter paroles et musiques en écho.
