Maddyson Borka propose une analyse de la façon dont les Aymara de la région du Lac Titicaca (Bolivie) conçoivent et construisent leurs interactions avec les entités non-humaines (plantes, esprits, animaux, éléments naturels, espaces etc.). Ces interactions sont envisagées dans leurs dimensions discursive et grammaticale, ce qui demande d’adopter un point de vue à la fois anthropologique et linguistique. En abordant la question des relations humains/non-humains avec une perspective s’inspirant de l’ethnosyntaxe et une approche pragmatique, Maddyson Borka souhaite mettre en lumière les moyens grammaticaux et lexicaux employés par les locuteurs aymarophones pour verbaliser leurs interactions avec différents types d’entités. Il s’agit notamment de déterminer de quelles manières les locuteurs expriment les propriétés agentives des participants à l’interaction, mais aussi celles de la patientivité, soit de la transformation du patient par l’action.

Le terrain choisi pour cette enquête, la Isla de la Luna, qui se situe sur le Lac Titicaca, côté bolivien, se retrouve d’ailleurs actuellement au centre de différents discours et pratiques liés aux vestiges incas et aux entités qui les entourent –y compris ceux résultant du tourisme récent. Le croisement des données récoltées à partir de l’observation participante et de la constitution d’un corpus d’enregistrements en aymara –transcrits, glosés et traduits–, a pour but de répondre à un double objectif. D’une part, la compréhension des modes d’expression de l’agentivité et des relations actancielles en aymara. D’autre part, la mise au jour des régimes d’interactions avec les entités composant l’environnement des habitants. L’objectif plus général sera de contribuer à une réflexion sur les modes d’imputation d’agentivité, d’un point de vue empirique et théorique.

Thesis entitled: Linguistic Anthropology of Human/Non-Human Interactions Among the Aymara of Lake Titicaca

Maddyson Borka presents an analysis of the way in which the Aymara of the Lake Titicaca region (Bolivia) design and construct their interactions with non-human entities (plants, spirits, animals, natural elements, spaces, etc). These interactions are considered in their discursive and grammatic dimensions, necessitating the adoption of both an anthropological and linguistic approach. In addressing the question human/non-human relationships with a perspective drawing upon ethno-syntax and a pragmatic approach, Maddyson Borka intends to shed light on grammatical and lexical methods employed by Aymara speakers to verbalise their interactions with various kinds of entities. Mainly, she aims to determine the ways in which speakers express agentive ownerships over participants in the interaction, but also those of patience, that is, the transformation of patience through action.

The study’s field, the Isla de la Luna on the Bolivian side of Lake Titicaca, is currently in the centre of various discourses and practices linked to Incan remains and the entities that surround them – including those resulting from recent tourism. The intersection of collected data from participant observation and the creation of a body of Aymara recordings – transcribed, annotated, and translated – strives to respond to a double objective. On one hand, comprehending modes of expressing agency and relationships in Aymara. On the author hand, the updating of interaction regimes with entities composing the inhabitants’ environment. The more general objective will be to contribute to a reflection on modes of imputation of agency, from an empirical and theoretical point of view.
